July 22, 1962. Mariner 1 lifts off for Venus, wanders off course, and the range safety officer blows it up 293 seconds in. The guidance equation was supposed to use a smoothed radar velocity, but the mark that meant smoothed was left out when the formula was transcribed into code. So the rocket steered on raw, jittery readings and chased the noise. Arthur C. Clarke called it the most expensive hyphen in history. Put the smoothing back.
Objective
Fill out with the smoothed velocity series, averaging each reading with its two neighbours.
Steps
$ smooth(out, {100,0,0,0,100}, 5)
100 33 0 33 100
$ smooth(out, {7,9}, 2)
7 9
$ smooth(out, {5}, 1)
